Convocation – at last!

Going back to school for a Masters degree was one of the toughest decisions I have ever made. I never thought I would do a Masters! I think the people I graduated with would probably roll over in their Porsches (they all became doctors). Don’t get me wrong, I’m intelligent. I just wasn’t interested in things like liver function and physics. I am a kinesthetic learner. I did very well in lab courses!

But when I felt like I had a really bad case of Mommy-brain I was at a loss. My husband suggested the Masters. Why he would suggest something that would increase his workload by about 50%, I’ll never know. I guess it was the pain of knowing I wasn’t happy. My other rationale was that at the age of 36, I had at least 30 years of professional productivity ahead of me. I loved working with the more difficult rehab cases before my children were born but it was getting pretty draining. I needed to be doing something I loved. So, with a 1 1/2 year old and a 3 year old at home (thanks to Granny for helping out) I went back to school after a 14 year absence.

It was tough at times. Being a mom & wife, running a business, going to school and TAing definitely keeps you busy! But it was worth it. When I went back, I had a few goals in mind – things that I thought having a Masters degree would help me achieve. I wanted to feel more confident in my scientific knowledge – achieved. I wanted to teach university courses – achieved (I currently teach in the Biomedical Physiology & Kinesiology department at SFU). Finally, I had a goal that I wasn’t sure I would ever have the confidence to attain – to be an international fitness presenter. Achieved – I presented at IDEA World Fitness Convention in 2009!

So, as I walk across the stage tomorrow to accept my Masters degree I will think of everyone who has helped me get there and everything I have already been able to achieve because I bit the bullet and did something I never thought I’d do. And I am so glad I did.

Free Bread & 1/2 Price Classes!!

Lots of things have happened in the last couple of weeks…one of which is a new edition to our family. No, I didn’t have a baby – my sister did! Welcome to the world, little Cecilia Rita Lynn!

Now, down to business. Are any of you on Meetup.com? For those of you who aren’t, here’s a quick explanation. Meetup.com is an online social networking site with a twist – you actually go and physically meet people!! Crazy idea, I know! What you do is go to the website, put in the information that they ask for (such as name, location, what kind of things you are interested in) and they will list a bunch of meetups based on your interests and geographical location. I first found out about it through the moms I teach and now I let all new moms know about it because it is a great way for them to get out of the house and make connections in their communities.

Why do I mention Meetup.com? Because I have a meetup group: The MommyMoves Pre & Post Natal Fitness Group. I post my schedule on it and let you know what is going on in your community. Usually it is something that you wouldn’t find in the local paper – such as a cloth diapering info session, free Try-It classes or contests. Which brings me to my next point.

Right now we are having a contest on the Meetup. If you join our Meetup and go to the message board, you will find details about how you can win 5 free loaves of Silver Hills bread (you know – the yummy, healthy stuff). As an SFU nutrition instructor, I was very excited when the bakery contacted us!

But, what better to go with the bread than an outdoor workout in Cloverdale Athletic Park? I’m offering a series of 1/2 price Mom & Baby Bootcamp classes. A 10 session card is only $52.50 and you have 14 Thursdays to fit those 10 sessions in! That is a deal! For more info, go to the MommyMoves Pre & Post Natal Fitness Meetup group and click on the calendar (the class runs on Thursdays from 10:45 – 11:45 am). Don’t forget to RSVP so I bring enough equipment!
